A sampling plan and spatial distribution for site-specific control of Sphenophorus levis in sugarcane Agronomy
Pavlu, Franz Arthur; Molin, José Paulo.
Sphenophorus levis has become a major pest of sugarcane plantations in Brazil, causing significant losses in productivity. Few studies have been conducted on the spatial distribution of this pest in the field, which is essential for the development of sampling plans. We aimed to characterize the spatial distribution of S. levis in sugarcane, defining a reliable, practical and feasible sampling plan, as well as generating application maps for production areas, allowing for comparison of the consumption of inputs in a conventional system with site-specific application. The study was conducted in areas around Piracicaba, Brazil. First, we conducted sampling to evaluate the best sampling density to characterize the spatial dependence. The results showed that...

Bionomic data and larval density of Scarabaeidae (Pleurosticti) in sugarcane in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Coutinho,Gilmar Vieira; Rodrigues,Sérgio Roberto; Cruz,Edna Cristina da; Abot,Alfredo Raul.
Bionomic data and larval density of Scarabaeidae (Pleurosticti) in sugarcane in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Phytophagous larvae of Scarabaeidae cause damage to diverse crops. Information on these pests is scarce; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine biological aspects and larval density of species occurring in an area of sugarcane. The studies were developed in Sidrolândia from April 2009 to March 2010. Scarab beetle larvae were collected in sugarcane roots every fifteen days, taken to the laboratory and reared to obtain the adults and determine biological parameters. A total of 2,656 larvae were collected, being 162 Liogenys fuscus, 120 Cyclocephala verticalis, 37 Cyclocephala forsteri, and 2337 Anomonyx sp. In...

Entomopathogenic nematodes: potential for exploration and use in South America Neotropical Entomology
GREWAL,PARWINDER S.; NARDO,ELIZABETH A. B. DE; AGUILLERA,MARINEIDE M..
Entomopathogenic nematodes have potential for biological control of insect pests. They are currently used for the control of soil and cryptic pests in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Entomopathogenic nematodes can be easily mass-produced and applied using conventional spray equipment. They have a broad host range and are safe to the environment. Due to the history of success with implementation of biological pest control programs, South American countries have a great opportunity to develop and implement the use of entomopathogenic nematodes. Recent emphasis on fruit and vegetable production in Brazil also stresses a need to implement safer and effective pest control methods. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in...

Occurrence, biology and behavior of Liogenys fuscus Blanchard (Insecta, Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) in Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Rodrigues,Sérgio Roberto; Barbosa,Crislany de Lima; Puker,Anderson; Abot,Alfredo Raul; Ide,Sergio.
Due to the importance of some Pleurosticti Scarabaeidae as agricultural pests allied to information absence on the species that occur in Brazilian Central-West region, on studies occurrence, biology and behavior on this group of scarabs were conducted. Biology and behavioral studies started with Liogenys fuscus Blanchard, 1850 (Melolonthinae), a very common species and were developed in Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul. Adult beetles were collected from light traps from February 2005 to January 2007, at the experimental farm of the Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul in Aquidauana (UEMS). In the laboratory adults were placed in plastic containers with soil with sprouts of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf (Poaceae). Eggs were transferred to a climatized...
